Transformative Pilot Project conducts technical meeting

The National Project Technical Committee for the Transformative Pilot Project on Strengthening the Monitoring, Reporting and Verification (MRV) of Mitigation Actions – Monitoring the rapid roll out of Photovoltaic Systems in The Gambia last Thursday held a technical meeting at Senegambia Beach Hotel.
The project aims to support national development priorities and capacities to plan, finance and achieve GHG emission reductions and the implementation of low-carbon solution to local development challenges.
The Transformative Pilot Projects of the Monitoring, Reporting and Verification (MRV) for Climate Action Programmme in The Gambia is supported by the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change of Canada.
Bubacar Zaidi Jallow, deputy permanent secretary at the Ministry of Environment, Climate Change and Natural Resources said one of the major priorities of The Gambia is to enhance technical, systemic and institutional capacities to actively monitor the progress and impacts of climate change, energy generation and development strategies.
He added that the project is necessary to improve the effectiveness and efficiency of policy decisions and investments to achieve the ambitious national development target, reduce GHG emissions by 49% below business within the next seven years.
“It is also the way to sustainable development goals. With a strong, dynamic MRV-MA system, decision makers can periodically readjust to find the most efficient and effective policies to achieve climate targets and make the best use of available resources,” he also said.
Dr Mamma Sawaneh, Project Pilot Coordinator for the National Project Technical Committee said The Gambia in its most recent national climate commitment outlined 23 different GHG mitigation measures to achieve significant emission reduction across different sectors.
Dr Sawaneh noted that MRV-MA systems can actively inform policy design and selection or refinement of targets. “MRV-MA systems are well-equipped to serve this role when they involve an impartial review process, present information in a timely manner, and have a strong institutional connection to the policy development process,” he added.
