Five people were killed in the early hours of this morning when a speeding commercial van locally called “gele gele” hit a truck parked on the roadside at Tanene Village, in Kombo East District.
An eyewitness said the “gele gele” with registration BJL 1154 S, was travelling from Jarra Soma to Brikama when the speeding driver lost control and hit the truck, ending the lives of five people and others to hospital.
“I was sleeping when I suddenly saw myself sitting on the floor here and didn’t know what happened,” said an eyewitness.
The five deaths are Mariatou Chune from Sarre Musa, Mustapha Keita from Jarra Sutukung, Essa Jawo from Bandedara, Fatou Ceesay from Jarra Barrow Kunda and unidentified girl in her early 20’s at the time of reporting with 12 others injured and 1 referred to Edward Francis Small Teaching Hospital EFSTH in Banjul.
Mama, a native of Tanene Village has cried for help from the authorities as she rages her frustrations on the number of accidents in the village.
“All these accidents happening here are caused by these trucks, how can you park at a critical Junction like this without any reflector,” Mama said.
She said road accident have become tradition in the village as every year, they witness serious accidents. She then recalled a similar accident last year that claimed 5 – 6 lives.
