The Secretary-General,

Dear Sir,

PETITION AGAINST MUSTAPHA DARBOE’S VICE PRESIDENCY AT GPU WHILE OPERATING A MEDIA ENTITY IN CONTRAVENTION OF THE UNION’S CONSTITUTION

We the undersigned concerned journalists hereby humbly petition the executive of Gambia Press Union (GPU) against the Union Vice President Mustapha K. Darboe’s vice presidency, holding an executive position while serving as the proprietor of Malagen news website.

We are calling on the executive to ensure that Mustapha K. Darboe resigns from the position of Vice President of GPU as an expression of profound respect for our Constitution and setting positive precedence for posterity.

As earlier brought to your attention, the GPU Vice President has been occupying this position unconstitutionally as he is currently running the above mention news platform as the proprietor which is against the letter and spirit of the GPU Constitution.

Paragrah G of section G the GPU 5 Constitution states: “No proprietor or part owner or managing director or managing editor of a media house shall be eligible for election to any position in the executive committee.”

We have no doubt that this section is meant to avoid conflict of interest and bars media owners or people with shares in media entities from contesting for election to occupy an executive position in our reputable Union.

Failure to abide by the letters and spirit of the GPU Constitution will lead to campaign for impeachment for deliberately flouting the Constitution.

We believe that this move is necessary as we have registered our displeasure against what can be described as GPU executive’s attempt to treat our Constitution with contempt in broad daylight.

Yours in the watchdog spirit;

Signed Ousman A. Marong.
