The Drug Law Enforcement has announced the interception and seizure of huge quantities of cannabis at Old Yundum and Brusubi Phase One.
Speaking to Mamos Media on Wednesday, Ousman Saidy-Bah, spokesman of the NDLEA said the seizure happened after 48 hours of diligent undercover operations.
“The seizure of 502 blocks weighing 225 kilograms and 760 grams of cannabis is unprecedented and a landmark in the history of the agency and the Gambia,” said PRO Saidy-Bah.
Mr. Saidy-Bah added that prior to the landmark seizure; the special operations unit of the DLEAG seized 26 blocks of cannabis weighing 12kg 150g at the residence of one Mr. Bai Modou Njie, a Gambian residing at the TAF estate in Brufut Gardens. He said the operatives discovered a pistol with five live rounds with him.
He further revealed that the cannabis seized from Mr. Njie was taken from the consignment seized on December 20, 2020. He said the investigations are ongoing in which Mr. Ousman Kanteh 30, Mr. Seedia Ndow, 28 and Mr. Ebrima Bittaye, 52, are currently helping the police in their investigations.
He however said Ebrima Bittaye was arrested while in the company of Ousman Kanteh who was in possession of eight blocks that he (Ebrima Bittaye) came to collect from one of the consignment of drugs packed inside a property located at Old Yundum.
Saidy-Bah said a subsequent operation discovered that 396 blocks were concealed in 11 wooden pallets in a green Scania truck with registration number KM 7989 C parked in the same property. He revealed that probing into the matter, the operatives recovered 98 blocks at a residence in Brusubi Phase 1. He said one Seedia Ndow was the occupant to the place.
“Initial investigations linked a person of interest who fled our jurisdiction. OCRTIS, our counterparts in Senegal apprehended him in Dakar on Tuesday 29 December 2020 and handed him over on Friday 1 January 2021,” he concluded.
