The Gambia Drug Law Enforcement Agency (DLEAG) has burnt about five tons of different prohibited substances seized over the year.
The DLEAG Director General Alh. Bakary Gassama, the Minister of Interior, among others witnessed the destruction ceremony at Old Cape Road in Bakau on Wednesday morning.
“You are about to witness the destruction of 4 tons, 607 kg, 700g of Cannabis, 238kg, 264g of Cannabis Resin (Hashish), 17g of Heroine and 52kg, 143g, 400mg of Cocaine. The street value of these drugs stands at over D109 million” said DG Gassama.
“This is equivalent to over US$2 million,” he said ahead of the burning of the prohibited substances.
DG Gassama credited the seizure of the ‘huge’ quantity of drugs to the ‘extreme’ hard work and commitment of his officers and urged them to serve with professionalism and integrity at all times.
The Minister of Interior Yankuba Sonko said the fight against drug abuse and trafficking is a shared and common responsibility, adding that based on available and verifiable evidence, the Gambia is highly stable in terms of drug trafficking.
Annually, DLEAG burns different prohibited substances confiscated by its operatives.
