Former Gambian President Yahya Jammeh on Friday through his party’s new interim chairman Yaya Tamba, during a press conference at the Baobab Hotel endorsed Alliance for Patriotic Reorientation and Construction (APRC) coalition with the Gambia Democratic Congress (GDC) for the December 4th presidential elections.
Former President Jammeh recently turned down an offer to join forces with incumbent President Adama Barrow in the upcoming presidential election and urged his supporters to instead rally behind Sheikh Tijan Hydara, secretary general and founder of the Gambia Alliance for National Unity (Ganu).
In a telephone address to thousands of his supporters gathered in his home village of Kanilai, Jammeh, declared himself as legitimate leader of his party and fired the leadership for forming an alliance with his successor.
“We gather here today to click our fingers together to show solidarity in pursuance of salvaging The Gambia from the bondages of hardship, corruption, insecurity, ill health service delivery, poor education system, exploitation of our natural resources and others that Gambians are denied during the past 4 years,” Tamba said.
He added: “We have come into agreement under the directives of our former president Sheikh Prof Dr. Alhagie Yahya A.J.J Jammeh to make a formidable association and team work with a well seasoned, recognized and determined party whose focus is only geared towards the interest of The Gambia as is in his heart”.
According to the APRC new interim chairman, “Upon reaching intensive negotiations, looking into the integrities, Jammeh gave his blessings that we should work with the GDC and has approved that the party leader of GDC Mamma Kairaba Kandeh to be the flag bearer of the coalition 2021 named “Gambian Patriots (GP).
The Memorandum of Understanding Tamba read: “In this memo, we intent to collectively form a government made of competent and formidable bright minds and patriotic citizens,”
He further added that: “In the memo, dignitaries to the criteria, principles, ideals, terms and conditions outlined in the memo have legally committed themselves to it as stakeholders and participants in the government they wish to form and shall be obliged by law to fully implement each and every aspect of the memo if elected into office on the 4th December 2021”.
“Our aims and objectives in the coalition ‘Gambia Patriots’ are to rescue and liberate The Gambia from the current downward state of spiral lawlessness, conflicts, political instability, economic stagnation, degradation and national security,” Tamba continued
“This coalition is here also to work diligently for lasting peace and stability of the nation by reconciling all the citizens of The Gambia. To lead the nation on a path of reconciliation, national unity as well as opening a new chapter for our people based on our collective desires of moving its unison to build a progressive nation,” he highlighted.
Tamba went on to state: “We would establish a pragmatic national reconciliation council, reintroduce and strengthen the culture of respect for human rights and civil liberties as enshrined in the country’s constitution.”
