The former Lead Counsel of the Truth, Reconciliation and Reparations Commission (TRRC) Essa Mbye Faal, during a visit to the Centre for Victims of Human Rights Violation on Monday 11 October 2021 said the Barrow-led government is not interested in implementing the TRRC report.

Faal, who is now a presidential aspirant for the upcoming December 4 elections said victims have suffered greatly in the hands of a terrible dictatorship for the past 22 years.

“I have sat with many victims in hours of interviews narrating all the terrible things that have happened to them. Some of the victims have passed through horrible things,” he said. He added that if the government fails the Gambian people, then the people should hold them to account, adding that, the government is not interested in prosecuting Jammeh which will be the greatest betrayal of the government to the Gambian people.

He called for collaboration in ensuring justice for the victims saying: “if we do not do that, we will be failing in our responsibilities to them. Any individual who participated in enforcing impunity will be betraying the aspirations of Gambians.”

“I have zero confidence that the report of the TRRC will see the light of the day under this government. We said no to impunity, no to injustice, no to reconciliation without justice, and the perpetrators must face justice,” he added.

According to him, if the government does not act, Ghana will act, and if Ghana does not act, West Africa would act just to ensure justice for the victims. He therefore urged the victims to remain calm and wait for justice.

“In a government (that will be led) by Essa Faal, be rest assured that the perpetrators will face justice be it in this country or elsewhere,” he said.

Sheriff Muhammed Kijera, Chairman of the Victims Center thanked Mr Faal for visiting the center. “We want the next agenda of the incoming president to be the implementation of the TRRC recommendations,” he said.

Mr Kijera said the victims have no doubt that a government led by Essa Faal will fully implement the TRRC recommendations, adding that, Faal has done a lot for the victims.
