Lamin Bo Baaji, former Director General of the National Intelligence Agency (NIA) now Security Intelligence Services (SIC), has admitted to the Truth, Reconciliation and Repartition Commission (TRRC) that the NIA headquarters in Banjul was torture centre.

“I was driven from the army and appointed as the Director General (DG) of the NIA,” said Lamin Bo Baaj, the former NIA Director.

When asked by Lead Counsel Essa M Faal whether he was consulted before his appointment he answered in the affirmative.

“Yes they (the officials) contacted me and I accepted the offer with good faith. Upon resuming office I advised my people to eschewed themselves from torturing people or using the institution as a torture chamber. The NIA headquarters was operating as a torture centre meant to punish people,” he said.

Mr. Baaji who later became a victim of the same institution he headed, said the NIA were operating and torturing civilians just to satisfy the former President Yahya Jammeh.
