Gambia’s Minister of Health and Social Welfare (MoHSW) Dr. Ahmadou Lamin Samateh has yesterday, accused his own government of putting more focus on allowances designated to Coronavirus pandemic than the virus itself.
Dr. Amadou L Samateh made these wild revelations at the National Assembly, while giving his situatory and regulatory report before the lawmakers on the extension of the state of public emergency to either 21 or 45-days.
“Government is very corrupt and they are using the Coronavirus money for themselves. They (government) are putting more focus on the allowances than the Coronavirus pandemic;” Health Minister Samateh told deputies.
He lamented about his ministry’s lacked of basic materials to do their work effectively, adding that other government sectors are busy sharpening their eyes on the allowances designated for Coronavirus while squandering and wasting monies at random.
Dr. Samateh further accused some top government officials of providing names of gosh workers amounting up to 300 accounts. He said all these fake names are family members of some ministers whom he said are expected to receive allowances from COVID-19 funds. He said he has rejected these fake names, noting that they are not under the payroll of the Ministry of Health (MoH).
“Some of these names that were brought to receive allowances were family members and friends of some ministers,” he remarked.
The health minister who looked tired and distraught said he is the most vulnerable minister as his government is not doing what is expected of them to fight to end the deadly COVID-19 pandemic. He challenged The Gambia Police Force (GPF) to conduct an investigation on corruption and malpractice in some key government sectors.
Meanwhile, the Minister said many civil servants have built mansions due to bribery and corruption.
