One of the victims of the yesterday’s shooting incident in Kanilai, has been pronounced death at the Edward Francis Small Teaching Hospital in Banjul. The tension in the birth place of Gambia’s former president Yahya Jammeh remains extremely tense and volatile as one of the victims is confirmed death resulting from gunshot injuries sustained during a spontaneous demonstration by the villagers.
The spokesperson of the Gambia Armed Forces (GAF) Lieutenant Colonel Omar B. Bojang has confirmed that three out of the six victims who were shot with live bullets are seriously wounded.
The demonstrators were demanding the withdrawal of the members of the Gambia Armed Forces stationed together with the ECOWAS mandated ECOMIG soldiers at the village. Their redeployment to the former president’s village came following a disputed presidential election that showed long term ruler Mr. Jammeh refusing to step down until he was forced into exile in Equatorial Guinea.
