KMC residents raise concern over frequent road accidents

Residents of the Kanifing Municipality have raised concerns on frequent accidents happening on the roads describing it as very rampant, adding that drivers are not following the traffic rules and regulations.

Ebrima Njie, a taxi driver  expressed concern over the common road accidents saying that driving license should be given to only qualified and reasonable drivers.

He stated that reckless driving always leads to road accidents whereby drivers are always held responsible each time there is one.

Some of these drivers, according to him, are not qualified because they do not know the traffic signs, rules and regulations.

He went on to say that some of the drivers are sometimes drunk while driving, noting that in that state of mind they will not be able to control themselves which can cause an accident.

Reckless drivers, he said, are the ones that always cause road accidents not because no matter how small, wide, tarred or not the road is “if you drive carefully you will not cause an accident.”

Amadou Jallow, a tricycle rider also affirmed that reckless driving is the cause of most of the road accidents. He said each driver should be examined by the authorities before being issued a license.

He said drivers are also not giving chances to each other when there is traffic jams with everyone of them wanting to move at the same time. “Even some of the drivers use the footpath when driving and deprive people from walking on the footpath,” he also said.

He went on to say that both commercial and private drivers in the country park anyhow on highways to drop off passengers.

According to him, traffic officers are doing a good job to prevent road accident but the drivers also should try as much as possible to obey the signs, rules and regulations of the traffic and also remain focused when driving.

Babucarr Sillah, another taxi driver said road accidents are caused by reckless driving, but added that there is no good road in the country.

He claimed that most drivers are not Gambians and are drunkards. He urged drivers to stop over-speeding and encouraged the traffic officers not to relent on their good job on the roads.
