Kombo East League final ends in stalemate, rescheduled

By Cherno Omar Bobb

The 2022/23 Kombo East District Sports Committee League Final played between Bonto United and Ajax Football Academy of Giboro Kuto failed to produce a winner at the Kuloro Football Field on Saturday.

The keenly and well-contested final attracted hundreds of fans within the district as well as high profile dignitaries including the National Assembly Member for Kombo East, Abdou Sowe and Executive Secretary of the National Sports Council, Marcel Mendy among others.

Bonto United, who lifted this year’s Kombo East Knockout trophy will be hoping to make history during the reschedule final set for 8th July 2023 by becoming the first team to lift both the Knockout and League trophies in the same season.

A win for Ajax will ensure they lift their third league trophy.

Foday Keita, Head Coach of Ajax Football Academy, expressed disapointment with the organising committee for the time allocated for the final. According to him, there could have been a winner if not for the “less minutes” played.

He added that his side played better but could not penetrate their oponent’s defence line. Coach Keita said he will work on scoring to ensure his side lift the trophy during the rescheduled match.

Modou Ceesay, Head Coach of Bonto United, said his players’ morals were down due to the long wait for the final. However, he said they have learnt a lot during the game and will win the replay final.

He pointed out that they want to set a record that will be hard to break by another team in Kombo East.

Lamin Badjie, Chairman of Kombo East District Sports Committee, thanked boths team for showing discipline during the final. He also thanked natives of the district for showing that they are ready for sports.

He noted that their aim is to bring everyone on board knowing that Kombo East is a base for sports. Chairman Badjie added that they are not only focused on football but said they are faced with financial challenges and therefore called on all and sundry to support them.
