Lawmakers of the National Assembly on Wednesday handed over 134 million Dalasi to the Ministry of Higher Education, Research, Science and Technology (MoHERST) as a way of clearing the scholarship arrears owed to the University of The Gambia (UTG) by the government.

Sometime ago, staff of the UTG held a sit down strike to demand arrears owed to them among others which was later resolved by intervention of stakeholders.

However, the government was uncomfortable with the situation which resulted to the payment of D20 million at the negotiation table, leaving a balance of D134 million.

While scrutinizing the Supplementary Appropriation Bill 2021 tabled by the Finance and Economic Affairs Minister, Mambury Njie channeled the following monies from different ministries to address the arrears owed to UTG.

Fifteen million Dalasi was moved from the Judiciary, D25 million from Gambia Civil Aviation Authority, D50 million from the allocation of Land Compensation under the Bertil Harding Highway OIC project, and D200 million from the ministry of Transport, Works and Infrastructure.
