The Gambia National Olympic Committee GNOC has announced the election of Beatrice Allen as honorary member of the International Olympic Committee IOC.
Beatrice Allen is the first Vice President of the GNOC.
The release dated July 22nd 2020 states that :
After having served the International Olympic Committee for 14 years as member in different capacities and portfolios, Ms Allen has been elected and honoured as Honorary Member of the IOC at the 136th Session of the IOC held virtually on the 17th July 2020.
According to the IOC charter, “Any IOC member cease to be a member at the end of the calendar year during which he/she reaches the age of 70.”
In other words it simply means that Beatrice Allen, finishing her term of office at the end of 2020 due to reaching the age limit, was granted the status of IOC Honorary Member after having served as an IOC member for 14 good years.
The release adds that, according to the IOC President, Thomas Batch, “due to Beatrice’s dynamics, exemplary personality and the exceptional work done during her tenure as IOC Member which the Committee will continue to benefit for so many years, it was unanimously agreed for her to be granted the status of IOC Honorary Member based on the exceptional services she rendered to the IOC.”
In recognition of her distinct services, rendered to the IOC and Olympic Movement, she will be awarded with the Honorary Membership and Olympic order medal in the next IOC Session to be held next year.
It also worth mentioning that Beatrice still hold the position of Vice President at the World Baseball Softball Confederation (WBSC ) and is also a member of the following IOC Commission :
- Women in sports
- Olympic Education
- Public Affairs and Social Development
- Sustainability and legacy
- Medical and Scientific
- Education Commission of Association of National Olympic Committees ANOC
Meanwhile, in the domestic front of The Gambia and apart from serving as the first Vice President of the GNOC, Beatrice Allen a seasoned Sport Administor, also participates and serve as Member of the Women and Sports Commission of Committee of Gambia, Honorary Member of The Gambia Golf Association, Honorary Member of ANOCA Zone 2 ie the Association of National Olympic Committees of Africa and zone 2 is comprised of Cape Verde, Gambia, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Mali, Mauritania, Senegal and Sierra Leone.
