The Secretary General and Party Leader of the United Democratic Party (UDP), Ousainou Darboe, has said that UDP has always been against criminality in this country particularly the use of substances that are harmful to individuals.
Speaking Monday during a press conference at his office along Kairaba Avenue following reports that a security patrol taskforce comprising different security units intercepted a vehicle belonging to the UDP with some suspected cannabis.
“In my career as a lawyer I categorically refused defending anyone charged with drug cases and as a result we are not claiming innocence on the part of the gentleman because he has made his point clear that no drug was with him and he is innocent,” he noted.
According to him, the past 72 hours had been a concern for everyone as a lot of publicity had been made, with some positive while others were negative. He explained that several weeks ago, they took two of their vehicles to a mechanic to be serviced and put in a road worthy state.
“Mr. Darboe (mechanic) is someone I know personally since 1996. He is a member of the UDP which is why we entrusted him with the responsibility of taking care of our vehicles,” he disclosed.
According to him, he last communicated to the said Mr. Darboe last Tuesday because they expected him to finish servicing the vehicles by then but he promised to finish servicing them within two to three days and deliver them.
“During the early hours of Saturday night, someone who apparently works in Mr. Darboe’s garage took one of the vehicles, for what purpose we do not know”, he said, adding that when he was approached by the police, he decided to reverse and ran away because he did not have a license.
He further said that driver’s attempt to escape was aborted and he was apprehended.
He revealed that a search was conducted the following day and there was no drug found in the vehicle but according to them when they conducted further search, at the back seat they found seven raps of what was suspected to be cannabis while the gentleman insisted that he did not put it there and was innocent.
“About three months ago, I had intelligent information that I should advise Momodou Sabally, Karafa Sonko, Hon. Saho, Ya Kumba Jaiteh, Ebrima Dibba and myself to be careful about where we park our vehicles because there are people aiming to silence us and for me to be disqualified”, he claimed.
The incident was reported to have occurred in the early hours of Saturday in Sukuta involving a UDP political bureau vehicle with the registration number BJL 2870 R.
The driver of the vehicle Yusupha Jambang, has been taken into custody as investigations into the matter continues. Mr. Jambang has also been charged with willful damage to property.
