Lawyer Ousainou Darboe, Secretary General and party leader of the United Democratic Party (UDP), during a press conference on Saturday at the party’s head office in Kairaba Avenue denounces the vile audio circulating on social media platforms of an individual insulting the Wollof tribe with the aim of putting tribes against each other and staining the UDP’s name with the public.

“It has come to the attention of the UDP that a person unknown to the UDP has made an obnoxious and disgusting audio recording in which he hurled insults, obscenities and vulgarities that no decent person should ever utter against a fellow compatriot let alone a whole community,” Darboe said.

He added that the party roundly condemns the abominable utterances and completely denounces the vile audio circulating on social media platforms.

“UDP unequivocally condemns this unknown person and any person who traffics in abusive language and use unspeakable vulgarity to sow hatred and discord amongst Gambians,” he further said.

“This reprehensible behavior does not belong in our politics and it undermines our values of peaceful coexistence amongst all Gambians across ethnicity and religious lines. Therefore, UDP urges all members to distance themselves from such nasty characters and continue to be respectful and peace loving at all times,” he noted.

Darboe went on to state that “UDP is led by honorable and respectable Gambians who have sacrificed everything so that all of us can live in peace, unity and freedom each day.”He said the UDP does not sanction or countenance such abhorrent and contemptible behavior and any person behaving in this manner is not fit to be called a member of the UDP.

According to him, it is neither fair nor right to hold the UDP responsible for ranting of a disgusting person. “This person is unknown to the UDP and for all the party knows he could be an agent of the adversaries of the UDP set up to tarnish the image and high reputation of the party leader of the UDP,” he went on.

Darboe said anyone in his right mind will not think that Ousainou Darboe will encourage anybody to say anything against Wollofs in this country because doing so means I’ll be encouraging people to say something against my wives and against their families who are pure Wollofs of Banjul. “So I’ll never be part of anything that will be demeaning to the Wollofs whether in Banjul or anywhere else,” he concluded.
