The chairperson of the Gambia Centre for Victims of Human Rights Violations, Sheriff Mohammed Kijera, has reacted to comments made by Momodou Sabally directed at Essa Faal, lead counsel of the Truth, Reconciliation and Reparations Commission (TRRC) in an interview with Mamos Media on Friday.

“Momodou Sabally is found to discredit a process that the whole nation supported. We all know that Essa Faal and the likes of Dr. Lamin K Sise sacrificed a lot to come and work for the TRRC after leaving high paying jobs for a job that pays very little out of patriotism,” said Kijera.

Kijera added that it is very selfish of Sabally to come this far trying to discredit a system that has provided a healing process for many victims. “He lacks respect and empathy towards the victims who suffered severely under the Jammeh era,” he said.

He added; “Sabally’s main objective is to discredit the work of the TRRC because he is an enabler and still a very strong supporter of Yahya Jammeh and he still has affection for him. He said as a responsible political party, the United Democratic Party (UDP) should not allow its senior members behave in such an irresponsible manner and almost all times being on issues trying to defend his godfather Yahya Jammeh. He described Sabally as one of the worst enablers of Jammeh and still has strong admiration for him. He therefore called on the UDP to come out and distant itself from “such callous and ruthless statements” made by Sabally.

“We cannot forget so soon when Sabally insulted his own tribe including his own parents and the whole Mandinka ethnic group. He went as far as referring to UDP as a Mandinka tribalist party. Today he is there for his personal gains but not for the interest of UDP,” he concluded.
